Ron Joyce and Family Donates $2 Million to Support Red Cross Efforts in Alberta

TORONTO, May 13, 2016 – The Canadian Red Cross thanks Ron Joyce and his family for their personal donation of $2 million to the Canadian Red Cross Alberta Fires appeal.
“The Canadian Red Cross is extremely grateful for this generous gift from the Joyce family,” says Conrad Sauvé, President and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross. “This is the single largest individual donation made to the Canadian Red Cross Alberta Fires appeal.”
Ron Joyce, a resident of Calgary, AB said, “It is part of our Canadian culture to look after one another during times of need. This tragedy really exemplifies the solidarity of our nation and we are privileged to be in the position to assist in the relief efforts.”
Steven Joyce, CEO of Fox Harb’r Resort in Wallace, NS said, “The tragedy in Fort McMurray reaches far beyond the geographical area of the fire itself. On some level, every Canadian has been moved by these events.”
The Canadian Red Cross continues to respond to meet the needs of individuals, families and entire communities who have been impacted by massive wildfires in Alberta.  To date, more than 700 Red Cross personnel are assisting with this response.  This support includes registration, family re-unification and providing accommodations, food, water and basic supplies.
“The needs are great and this very generous donation from the Joyce family will help support individuals, families and communities as they work to rebuild their lives,” adds Sauvé.
All individual donations, including today’s contribution from the Joyce family, will be matched by the Government of Canada.  Funds from the matching program will support Red Cross operations in communities affected by the wildfires in Alberta.
Canadians who wish to support the Red Cross response in Alberta can make a donation to the Canadian Red Cross Alberta Fires appeal. Donations can be made at your local Red Cross office, at www.redcross.ca or by calling 1-800-418-1111 and should be earmarked “Alberta Fires”.
